like to recycle, to use things at hand. Sometimes I recycle images and other times I recycle materials and objects. This habit comes from growing up in the 1970’s, in Nairobi, Kenya. Then, 'choice' was a word, not prominent in my life. Information was scarce. There were only few products, mainly local, on the shelves of shops. We inventively used and recycled objects and materials at hand.
Now I live in Antwerp where shops are filled with goods. 'Choice' confronts me everyday. I am not so good at making choices. I am better at recycling, using things at hand. I recycle human hair. I recycle images of anonymous plastic toy figures, 'Made in China.' I recycle images from my dreams. I give new lives to neglected materials, anonymous images and insignificant objects.

Ik hou ervan om te recycleren, om de dingen te gebruiken die ik bij de hand heb. Ik recycleer beelden, recycleer materialen en objecten. Deze gewoonte ontstond toen ik opgroeide in de jaren 1970 in Nairobi, Kenia. Toen was “keuze” enkel een woord. Informatie was zeldzaam. Er waren maar een paar producten verkrijgbaar in de winkels, meestal van plaatselijke makelij. We werden zeer inventief in het hergebruiken en wedersamenstellen van vindmaterialen.

Nu leef ik in Antwerpen waar de winkelschappen goed gevuld zijn. Ik moet elke dag 'kiezen'. Ik ben daar niet zo goed in, ben beter in het hergebruik van wat ik bij de hand heb. Ik recycleer menselijk haar. Ik recycleer beelden van anonieme plastic poppen 'Made in China'. Ik recycleer beelden uit mijn dromen. Ik geef nieuw leven aan verwaarloosde materialen, anonieme beelden en onbeduidende dingen.
